History

The following is from the journal of Qosimo Ekit from May 2011, just after he joined Lacuna as a Junior Historian.

Throughout the ages the slow creep of darkness has threatened to spread across our world. Torrents of negative human emotion, galvanized into Hauntings through unknown means, for an unknown cause, have the potential to wreak havoc on our world.

These hauntings can influence, harm, sometimes even kill. When weak, Hauntings are relegated to what is known as the KNOT. An alternate dimension one plane above our own. When strong, they can bridge the gap and cross over into our reality in flickers and spurts. Many supernatural creatures of myth can trace their origin stories back to the Hauntings that have plagued our planet since the birth of human emotion.

For as long as there has been recorded history, there have been secret records detailing the exploits of certain special individuals that can sense these Hauntings, fight or quell them, secure them, and then bond with the resulting artifact’s energy to continue fighting, now stronger.

What started out as disparate and unorganized individuals operating independently across the globe to thwart these Hauntings evolved. Centuries passed. Individuals became groups, groups became organizations. In 1227 AD these groups unified under a single, secret, banner. Lacuna was born.

For centuries after its inception, Lacuna took a form similar to that of the Knights Templar and the Illuminati-- operating from the shadows. Their reach was global and their numbers were strong, but they remained underground.

The end of the Industrial Revolution brought change to Lacuna and a step, albeit partially, out of the shadows. Still funded by private fortunes, their benefactors were now stakeholders, their members now employees.

Driven by a need to justify their agents’ movements and to offer said agents plausible cover for their actions, Lacuna rose from the shadows and formed a Corporation, fronted as one of the world’s largest dealers in antiquities and historical artifacts.

The internal workings of the Corporation remain a well kept secret. At its peak Lacuna had offices across the globe. However, in recent years and for as yet unknown reasons, the Corporation has been in a state of decline. They've sustained casualties on numerous fronts, and higher-ups continue to keep secrets from other employees. Their funding has dwindled, but it seems their mission has remained the same.

Protect those who cannot protect themselves from the unknowable Hauntings of the KNOT. Obtain artifacts to aid in their fight. Seek knowledge so that the next generation of Lacuna Potentials is better equipped than the last. Keep knowledge about Hauntings and Artifacts out of the hands of those that would abuse or misuse it.

Their members have held prominent political offices, been granted knighthoods, and have even travelled to space. They have operated from the shadows of our world and in the murky light of the KNOT. They have protected normal people through extraordinary acts of bravery and at times, self sacrifice. They are the unsung heroes of generations… and I just joined their ranks.
